Nemei-in Temple

Japanese:
Nemei-in Temple
This was the name of the temple from the late Heian period to the Sengoku period, and is thought to have inherited the name of Nejime-go, Osumi County, Osumi Province, in ancient times. It was divided into Nejime-in Kitamata (Nene-Kitamata) and Nejime-in Minamimata (Nene-Minamimata), the former also called O-nejime and the latter Kononejime. Nejime-in Kitamata is identified with Kinko-cho and southern Kanoya City, Kagoshima Prefecture, and Minamimata with Tashiro, Kinko-cho, Minamiosumi-cho. It appears as Nejime in a document from 1069, and it is known that it was divided into three villages on the north and three on the south. In the late Heian period, Nejime-in Kitamata was part of Shimazu Manor County, and Minamimata was the territory of Osumi Masahachiman Shrine (now Kagoshima Shrine in Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture). The position of land steward passed from Shimazu Tadahisa to Nakahara Chikayoshi, and Kitamata went to the Hojo clan (Nagoshi clan), while Minamimata was held by the Nene clan (Takebe clan) who held both the innoshi and land steward positions. The position of bensaishi in Kitamata was hereditary to the Fujiwara clan (Toyama clan). In 1267, Kitamata consisted of the villages of Korimoto, Hamada, Yokoyama, Oaira, and Shishime. In 1276, Minamimata was divided into Korimoto, Sata, and Tashiro, and other historical documents include Shitenri and many other names. During the Nanboku-cho period, the Nene clan (Takebe clan) gained power, and Oaira and other places became strategic bases. During the Sengoku period, the Kimotsuki clan gained power.
