Physician. Born in Okayama Prefecture. After graduating from the Sixth High School, he entered the Fukuoka Medical College of Kyoto Imperial University (the precursor to the Faculty of Medicine at Kyushu Imperial University), graduating in 1908 (Meiji 41). He became an assistant at the university and worked in the First Department of Internal Medicine, and in 1916 (Taisho 5) became an associate professor and shared the Third Department of Internal Medicine. In the same year, together with Inada Ryukichi, he received the Imperial Academy Prize for "research on jaundice hemorrhagic spirochete disease." In 1918, he became an associate professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Tokyo Imperial University, and studied abroad in the United States. After returning to Japan, he became a professor at the Faculty of Medicine at Kyushu Imperial University.
