In novels, apart from Joyce and Beckett, Flann O'Brien (1911-1966) tried experimental structuring techniques in works such as The Third Policeman (written in 1940, 1967), but realism generally dominated. Liam O'Flaherty (1896-1984) published many novels and short stories, such as The Informer (1925), which depicts betrayal and violence in a turbulent city at the time, Skerrett (1932), which is set in his hometown of the Aran Islands and tells the story of the downfall of Skerrett, a teacher who rebels against the priests, and Famine (1937), which depicts the life and disintegration of a rural family in the 1840s. Frank O'Connor (1903-66) dealt with tragedies during the anti-British conflict in his short story collection The People's Guest (1931), and in his novels The Saint and Mary Kate (1932) and Dutch Genre Paintings (1940), he portrayed young men and women trapped by the customs of a small provincial town.
