Fujiwara no Mitsuyori - Fujiwara no Mitsuyori
Year of death: 5th January 1173 (18th February 1173)
Year of birth: Tenji 1 (1124)
A nobleman in the late Heian period. He was the grandson of Hamuro (Fujiwara) Akitaka, who wielded great power as Shirakawa Innosuke, and the son of the daughter of Gon Chunagon Akiyori and Gon Chunagon Fujiwara Toshitada. He was known by the names Hamuro Dainagon, Katsura Dainagon, and Rokujo. After serving as Benkan, Kuranokami, and Kurodo no Kami, he was promoted to Sangi Jusanmi in 1156 and Gon Dainagon in 1160. The Gukansho records that "The first Dainagon among the various officials was Mitsuyori." In 1161, he was promoted to Shonii. In 1164, he became a monk, taking the Buddhist name Mitsunen. He was known from records and stories to have been a capable and practical government official, as well as a man of great strength, which was rare in the aristocratic society of the time. The most famous story is that he was not afraid of his powerful nephew Fujiwara Nobuyori, and instead warned his younger brother Korekata, who was trying to side with Nobuyori in the Heiji Rebellion (1159), and rescued Emperor Nijo, who was imprisoned in the Imperial Palace, thus defeating Nobuyori's plan. He was also a poet, and wrote works such as "Katsura Dainagon Kashu." <References> Fusao Kono, "Research on the Political History of the Late Heian Period"
