Midorogaike Pond

Also known as Mizoro Pond, this pond is located at the southern foot of Matsugasaki Hills in Kita Ward, Kyoto City. It has a circumference of about 1.5 kilometers. It is a shallow pond with a depth of about 2 meters, and as its name suggests, there is a thick layer of mud at the bottom. The floating islands and the pond are home to aquatic plants such as water shield and water lily, as well as colonies of carnivorous plants such as sundew and bladderwort, as well as crustaceans and insects. The Mizoro Pond Biological Community has been designated a national natural monument, but in recent years development in the surrounding area has progressed and pollution has progressed.

「みぞろがいけ」ともいう。京都市北区の松ヶ崎丘陵の南麓(なんろく)にある池。周囲約1.5キロメートル。水深2メートル内外の浅い池で、その名の示すように池底には泥土が厚く堆積(たいせき)している。浮島や池中にはジュンサイ、コウホネなどの水生植物や、モウセンゴケ、タヌキモなどの食虫植物の群落のほか、甲殻類、昆虫類が生息し、「深泥池生物群集」として国の天然記念物に指定されているが、近年周辺の開発が進み、汚染が進んでいる。
