Gozenyama [village] - Gozenyama

Japanese: 御前山[村] - ごぜんやま

A village in Higashiibaraki County, northwest of Ibaraki Prefecture. Population 4,753 (1995). Occupying hilly land on the edge of the Yamizo Mountains, the Naka River flows east through the center of the village, and bordering Tochigi Prefecture to the west. During the Edo period, it was part of the Mito Domain, and in the late Edo period, one of the Mito Domain's local schools, Joyokan, was located here. At the end of the Edo period, it was also the site of the Tenguto Rebellion. There was a significant outflow of population in the 1960s, and in 1970 it was designated a depopulated area. Shiitake mushrooms are cultivated here. There is a Hino Motors test course that stretches to Ogawa Village. It is included in Gozenyama Prefectural Natural Park, and in recent years efforts have been focused on tourism development.

茨城県北西部，東茨城郡の村。人口4753(1995)。八溝山地縁辺の丘陵地を占め，中央部を那珂川が東流し，西は栃木県と接する。江戸時代は水戸藩領で，江戸後期に水戸藩の郷校の一つ時雍館（じようかん）が置かれ，幕末には天狗党の乱の陣地ともなった。1960年代に人口流出が著しく，70年に過疎地域の指定を受けた。シイタケ栽培が行われる。緒川村にかけ日野自動車のテストコースがある。御前山県立自然公園に含まれ，近年は観光開発に力が注がれている。
