The capital of Huila State in southwestern Colombia. It is located about 230 km south-southwest of the capital Bogota, on the right bank of the upper reaches of the Magdalena River, which separates the eastern and central Andes mountains. The settlement built by the Spaniards in 1539 was destroyed by attacks from Indians, and the current town was rebuilt in 1612. It is the commercial and industrial center of the surrounding agricultural and pastoral areas, distributing cotton, rice, coffee, corn, sesame, and livestock, and the city is home to industries such as cotton products, cement, Panama hats, and marble processing. It is the birthplace of José Eustacio Rivera, a representative Colombian poet and novelist. It is the terminus of the railway that runs south from Bogota, and is also connected by road, and is also a key transportation point by water and air, which supports the city's commercial activity.
