Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd.
A Sumitomo-affiliated electric wire manufacturer. In 1897, Sumitomo Sohonten (see Sumitomo Zaibatsu) acquired Nippon Dosho Co., Ltd. and established Sumitomo Copper Rolling Works, which manufactured copper electric wires and other products. In 1911, the electric wire manufacturing division was separated from Sumitomo Copper Rolling Works and established Sumitomo Electric Wire & Cable Works. In 1920, the company entered into a capital alliance with International Western Electric Co. (WE) of the United States and was reorganized as a joint-stock company. In 1939, the company was renamed to its current name. It is a leader in electric wires. Its technological capabilities in optical fiber, communications, compound semiconductors, etc. are also highly regarded. In recent years, the company has seen continued growth in automotive parts. The head office is in Osaka, with factories in Osaka, Itami, Yokohama, and others. Capital in 2011 was 99.7 billion yen, and sales for the fiscal year ending March 2011 were 2,033.8 billion yen. Sales breakdown (%) is automobiles 47%, information and communications 11, electronics 8, electric wires, equipment, and energy 22, and industrial materials and others 12. Overseas sales ratio 44%.
