…Enshu had close ties with the nobility, and was involved in the construction of the gardens and teahouses at Emperor Gomizunoo's Sento Imperial Palace, and also influenced the Katsura Imperial Villa. The aesthetic sense known as kireisuki (beautiful suki) seen in Katsura Imperial Villa and other places was not unique to Enshu, but could also be considered the aesthetic sense of the Kan'ei culture. Its characteristics include highly decorative and gorgeous designs, delicate expressions that are somewhat cumbersome, clear and sharp outlines and colors, and symbolism that has been used in literature throughout history and around the world. …
