Rosie - Joseph Losey

British film director of American origin. Born in Wisconsin. After working as a theater critic, stage director, and documentary director, he signed with RKO in 1949 and released films such as The Boy with the Green Hair (1948) and The City of Violence (1950). His social and analytical interests attracted some attention, but he was hit by the Red Scare and fled to England in 1953. He gained international fame with The Servant (1963), The Event (1967), and The Love (1971), all based on screenplays by playwright Harold Pinter. While depicting the decadence of the British middle class, he mercilessly captured human weaknesses with his cold, strict style. Other works include The Scent of Eve (1962), The Gunman (1964), and Melody (1972).

アメリカ出身のイギリスの映画監督。ウィスコンシン州に生まれる。劇評家、舞台演出家、記録映画監督を経て、1949年RKOと契約、『緑色の髪の少年』（1948）、『暴力の街』（1950）などを発表。その社会的関心、分析的興味から一部の注目を集めるが、「赤狩り」の災いを被り、1953年イギリスに亡命。劇作家ハロルド・ピンターの脚本による『召使』（1963）、『できごと』（1967）、『恋』（1971）で国際的な名声を獲得、イギリス中産階級の退廃を描きながら、冷たく厳しいスタイルで人間の弱点を容赦なくとらえた。ほかに『エヴァの匂(にお)い』（1962）、『銃殺』（1964）、『暗殺者のメロディ』（1972）など。
