Egyptian goddess. She is thought to be of Western origin, as her common name is Tehenut (meaning "Libyan woman"). She was the national deity of the Delta region of Lower Egypt from ancient times, and the patron deity of Sais in particular. The Greeks identified her with the goddess Athena. She was the mother of Sobek. She was considered a goddess of the heavens, like Nut and Hathor, and was generally considered the mother of the gods, especially Re. She basically had two different characters, as a goddess of war and the head of domestic female arts. As the former, she put monsters and evildoers who roamed the night to sleep with her arrows, and as the latter, she wove the world with her shuttle. When she was incorporated into the Osiris faith, she was confused with Isis and became the protector goddess of the dead. Her temple in Sais is said to have had a medical school, the "House of Life," attached to it.
