1118‐74 The first ruler of the Zengid dynasty in Syria. Reigned 1146-74. After the death of his father Zengi, he unified Syria from his base in Aleppo, led a holy war (jihad) against the Crusaders, occupied Edessa and parts of Antioch, and dispatched Salah al-Din to Egypt in response to a request for reinforcements from the Fatimid dynasty, which led to the independence of the Ayyubid dynasty. He is also famous for carrying on the traditions of the Seljuk dynasty and advocating a policy of protecting the Sunni sect, building madrasas (schools) in Damascus, Aleppo, Hims (Homs), and other places.
