A semi-cold-tolerant annual or perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. Seven species grow wild in South Africa, and are known as Cape marigolds in English and African marigolds in Japanese. The stems are 25-60 cm tall. In May and June, flower heads bloom at the top of the stem. They are cultivated in flower beds or for cut flowers. The annual species include the Pulvialis and Sinuata species, and the Aurantiaca species, which is thought to be a natural hybrid of the two species (a perennial in its native habitat). The Pulvialis species has flowers 2.5-5 cm in diameter, white on top and purple on the bottom. The Sinuata species has flowers 3-4 cm in diameter, orange-yellow with purple centers. The Aurantiaca species has flowers 5-6 cm in diameter, orange-yellow with purple petal bases. The perennial species include the Chrysanthemifolia and Ecronis species. The Chrysanthemifolia species has flowers 3-4 cm in diameter and yellow. The flowers of the Ecklonis species are 6cm in diameter, white with blue petal bases. [Uemura Naoyuki] CultivationIt grows well in sunny, well-drained, humus-rich sandy soil. Seeds are sown from September to early October, transplanted into pots, etc., and allowed to overwinter in frames before being planted in the spring.
