Nurigome - Nurigome

Japanese:
Nurigome - Nurigome

A room with walls all around it. It was used as a bedroom or storeroom. In the Heian period, shinden-zukuri style, the two-ken square corners of the main building of the shinden or tainoya are often nailed together to create a nurigoe. In shinden-zukuri style, which is centered on open partitions such as blinds, shoji (today's sliding doors), and byobu (folding screens), nurigoe surrounded by walls and gable doors (double-opening wooden doors) is probably a remnant of the old custom of using closed, dark places as bedrooms. However, in the mid-Heian period, a curtain stand was placed on the main building or eaves to make it a bedroom, and the nurigoe came to be used as a storeroom. In the "Yugiri" chapter of the Tale of Genji, a special situation is depicted in which a woman uses a nurigoe as a bedroom to avoid suitors. However, in private homes, it was used as a bedroom until the early modern period.
