From the end of the 12th century, each voice in polyphonic music began to move independently, and a clear method of expressing the contrast in rhythm between the voices was required. For this reason, from the end of the 12th century to the 13th century, Notre Dame school polyphonic music used modal notation, which expresses six rhythmic patterns (rhythmic modes) by the arrangement of ligatures (ligatura) on square neumes. This method of notation indirectly expresses the note value of each note by indicating the type of mode, rather than directly indicating the note value of each note. …
