A river that flows north through central Kagawa Prefecture. In ancient times it was called "Kotogawa". The upper reaches are also called Naibagawa. It originates near Mount Ryuo (1,060 meters), the highest peak of the Sanuki Mountains, flows north and empties into the Seto Inland Sea in the western Takamatsu Plain. It is 33 kilometers long and has a drainage area of 115 square kilometers. In the upper reaches, a multipurpose dam, Uchibaike Pond, was built in 1953 (Showa 28). It is said that the river's current course was formed during the Edo period when a tributary (branch) that flowed down through the current Takamatsu city area was closed off with a levee and abandoned as a river.
