The second king of ancient Rome. Reigned 715?-673? BC. Dates of birth and death unknown. He is said to have been from the Sabine town of Cres, and was proclaimed king by the senate after the death of Romulus. Some say he is a fictitious character, but his name is of Sabine descent, suggesting that he actually existed. He is said to have spread religion and rituals to the Romans, revised the calendar, built a royal palace, and otherwise transformed them into a peaceful people, with the advice of the water nymph Egeria, but these legends are difficult to consider as historical fact.
