Bonnet (English spelling)

Bonnet (English spelling)
A basic type of hat for women. It covers most of the head from the top to the back, but exposes the forehead and face almost entirely. It generally has a wide brim around the face, and usually has no brim at the back, or only a small brim. In France, all cloth hats were called bonnets until the 16th century. In the 18th century, it came to mean a hood-like hat for women, and was then introduced into English as bonnet. Another theory is that the word derives from the Hindi word banat (a coarsely woven cloth). The 19th century was the heyday of bonnets, and they came in a wide variety of shapes. Currently, they are used for infants and young children.
