A decapod crustacean of the Atypodidae family (illustration). A freshwater shrimp used as fishing bait. Found in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa, it lives in rivers and ponds, but is more common in central and southern Honshu. It is 3 cm long and has a transparent greenish brown or blue-green color. The rostrum is slightly shorter than the carapace, with 14-34 spines on the upper edge (0-5 on the carapace) and 0-8 spines on the lower edge. The first and second thoracic legs have claws, but the tips of both fingers have brush-like tufts of hair, and the upper edge of the carapace is deeply concave.
