A city in the eastern part of Zhejiang Province, China, south of the mouth of Hangzhou Bay. Abbreviated as Yong. Located downstream of the Yongjiang River, it has been a port of foreign trade since the Tang Dynasty, and was a key location for trade with Japan, where tally trade ships arrived. It was opened to the public in 1842 by the Treaty of Nanjing. It also distributes products from the Ningshao Plain and the Zhoushan Archipelago, and trades a lot of tea, cotton, and fish. The surrounding area was the birthplace of Ningbo merchants who were skilled in business, and there are many Buddhist ruins such as Mount Ashoka and Mount Tiantong.
