...Since publications and dramatizations of historical information on the founding of the shogunate were prohibited by law, the period was set in the Ashikaga period, and he appeared as a supporting character under pseudonyms such as Masakiyo and Toranosuke in joruri plays such as "Honcho Sangokushi," "Hiyoshimaru Wakakino Sakura," "Yatsuko no Ukejo," "Gion Festival Faith Record," and "Ehon Taikoki." The play with Kiyomasa as the main character was "Kijyokan Morokoshi ni tsuki" (Demon Superior Officer's Diary) (written by Chikamatsu Ryusuke and others) performed at the Toyotakeza theater in Osaka in November 1796 (Kansei 8), which depicts Kiyomasa in Korea and includes the plot of "Jinjikan Kato," in which he rushes to the castle during a major earthquake and thus clears Hideyoshi's grudge. In January of the following year, the kabuki play "Keisei Yuzan Sakura (Asoyama Sakura)" (written by Tatsuoka Mansaku and others) performed at the Nakashiba Theater in Osaka dramatized "Kiyomasa of Poisonous Sake" based on the popular belief that Kiyomasa had been poisoned, and later, in September 1807 (Bunka 4), the joruri play "Shugo no Honjo (Guardian of the Eight Castles)" (written by Nakamura Gyōgan and others) performed at the Onishi Theater in Osaka also incorporated the story of poisonous sake.

…幕府成立事情に関する歴史に取材した出版物，劇化上演等は法的に禁じられていたため，時代も足利期に設定され，《本朝三国志》《日吉丸稚桜（わかきのさくら）》《三国無双奴請状（やつこのうけじよう）》《祇園祭礼信仰記》《絵本太功記》などの浄瑠璃に，正清，虎之助などの仮名で，脇役として現れた。清正を主役とした作品は1796年(寛政8)11月大坂･豊竹座上演《鬼上官漢土日記（きじようかんもろこしにつき）》(近松柳助ら作)で，朝鮮での清正を描き，大地震のとき城にかけつけ，秀吉の勘気がとけたという〈地震加藤〉の趣向もしくまれた。翌年1月大坂･中の芝居上演の歌舞伎《けいせい遊山桜（あそやまざくら）》(辰岡万作ら作)では清正が毒殺されたとの俗説によって〈毒酒の清正〉が劇化され，のち1807年(文化4)9月大坂･大西芝居の浄瑠璃《八陣守護城（しゆごのほんじよう）》(中村漁岸ら作)にも毒酒の件がとり入れられた。…
