Lionfish (Minohasago) - Lionfish

Japanese: ミノカサゴ(蓑笠子) - ミノカサゴ

It is a general term for marine fish of the genus Pterois in the family Scorpaeniformes, or one of these. The name comes from the fact that the pectoral and dorsal fins are long and look like they are wearing a straw raincoat. It is also called minouo (Tsushima) and minokoze (Kagoshima). In English, closely related species are called butterfly fish or tiger fish. There are four species of Pterois in the genus Pterois in the waters around Japan: lionfish, nettai lionfish, yellow lionfish, and hanan lionfish. The lionfish Pterois lunulata is found in various places south of the center of Japan, tropical islands in the Pacific Ocean, and even in Australia and the Red Sea, where it lives in coastal reef areas.

カサゴ目フサカサゴ科ミノカサゴ属の海産魚の総称またはそのうちの1種を指す。胸びれや背びれが長くのび，蓑（みの）をかぶったように見えることに由来した名称。ミノウオ(対馬)，ミノオコゼ(鹿児島)ともいう。英語では近縁種にbutterfly fish，あるいはtiger fishの名がついている。日本近海にはミノカサゴ，ネッタイミノカサゴ，キミオコゼ，ハナミノカサゴの4種のミノカサゴ属の魚がいる。ミノカサゴPterois lunulataは中部以南の各地，太平洋の熱帯諸島，さらにオーストラリア，紅海にまで分布し，沿岸の岩礁地帯に生息する。
