A philosophical poem by the English poet A. Pope. It was first published anonymously in 1733-34. It is in the form of four epistolary poems addressed to Lord Bolingbroke, with a heroic couplet as the poetic form. The first letter explains the relationship between humans and God and the universe, and presents the idea of the "chain of being." The second letter describes human nature and its psychological characteristics, and advocates the harmony between reason and desire. The third letter deals with the relationship between humans and society, tracing the development of society from a primitive state to civilization. The fourth letter, published somewhat later, discusses the nature of happiness.

イギリスの詩人 A.ポープの思想詩。 1733～34年に，初め匿名で出版された。ボリングブルック卿にあてた4つの書簡詩という形式をとり，詩型はヒロイック・カプレット。第1書簡では人間と神および宇宙との関係を説き，「存在の連鎖」の思想を述べる。第2書簡は人間の本性，その心理的特色を述べ，理性と欲望の調和を説く。第3書簡は人間と社会との関係を取上げ，社会が原始状態から文明へと発展する姿を跡づける。やや遅れて出た第4書簡は幸福とは何かを論じている。
