A small horse that lived in the Pliocene period of the Neogene, belonging to the suborder Equidae of the order Perissodactyla and the family Equidae. It evolved from Merychippus , which lived in the Miocene period of the Neogene. It was about the size of a donkey, and had three toes on both its front and back feet, which is why it was given the name Sanshiba (three-toed horse) in China. It had high tooth crowns, molar cones with complex enamel interlocking, and holes in its incisors. Its cheek teeth were columnar, but about half the height of modern horses. It was distributed in Eurasia, North America, and Africa. (→Perissodactyla) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
