A Treatise of Human Nature

Japanese: 人間本性論 - にんげんほんせいろん（英語表記）A Treatise of Human Nature

This is the major work of D. Hume, a leading 18th century British philosopher. It is also translated as "A Treatise of Human Nature." The first part, "Of the Intellect," and the second part, "Of the Passions," were published in 1739, and the third part, "Of Morals," and an appendix, were published in 1740. As the subtitle, "An Attempt to Introduce Experimental Methods into Mental Subjects," indicates, this book is an attempt to explore the human condition, or nature, through "observation" of the world in which humans empirically live, and is, so to speak, an attempt to apply the methods of Newtonian mechanics to moral philosophy as the "science of man."

18世紀イギリスを代表する哲学者D.ヒュームの主著。《人性論》とも訳される。1739年に第1編《知性について》と第2編《情緒について》とが，40年に第3編《道徳について》と《付録》とが刊行された。副題〈実験的方法を精神的主題に導入する一つの試み〉が示しているように，本書は，人間が経験的に営む世界の〈観察〉を通して，人間の条件＝本性を探究しようとしたものであり，いわば，ニュートン力学の方法を〈人間の学〉としての道徳哲学に適用しようとする企てであった。
