This is the major work of D. Hume, a leading 18th century British philosopher. It is also translated as "A Treatise of Human Nature." The first part, "Of the Intellect," and the second part, "Of the Passions," were published in 1739, and the third part, "Of Morals," and an appendix, were published in 1740. As the subtitle, "An Attempt to Introduce Experimental Methods into Mental Subjects," indicates, this book is an attempt to explore the human condition, or nature, through "observation" of the world in which humans empirically live, and is, so to speak, an attempt to apply the methods of Newtonian mechanics to moral philosophy as the "science of man." 18世紀イギリスを代表する哲学者D.
