A play by the French playwright Molière. A five-act verse comedy. It was first performed in 1666. It is also translated as "The Misanthrope," "The Solitary Guest," or "The Angry Lover." The impulsive Alcest is in love with the young widow Célimène, but the coquette only charms those around her and is reluctant to reveal her true feelings. She is a brilliant woman who delights salon guests with her skillful conversation, which exasperates Alcest. After losing a lawsuit, Alcest is filled with despair at the irrational world. Célimène is confronted with the love letters she has sent out in all directions, putting her in a difficult position. Alcest is sincerely inviting her to leave the secular world and live with her, but Célimène cannot imagine a life without socializing. The two of them are on parallel paths. Surrounding the two are a vain poet, frivolous marquises, and women who pretend to be pious, making the play a caricature of high society. It is considered one of the most accomplished works of classical French comedy.
