〘Noun〙 Cypress produced in the forests of the Kiso region of Nagano Prefecture. Because of its strong fragrance and excellent quality, it was called Honboku (main tree) or Kiso cypress (kisohi) in the lumber market during the Edo period, and was also called Bishu lumber because the Owari clan had a monopoly on selling it. *Atsuta Shiratori Lumber Magistrate's Memorandum (1746) "In the Kamigata area of Edo, it is called Bishu lumber, a name derived from the fact that Kiso cypress was sold exclusively here."
