Spanish guitarist. Born in Lorca in southeastern Spain. After studying at the Valencia Conservatory, he was discovered by the famous conductor A. Argenta (1913-1958) and made his debut in Madrid in 1947 playing Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. He then studied under Enesco and Gieseking in Paris. In 1952, he was in charge of the music for the film Forbidden Games (directed by R. Clement) and became famous around the world. As a representative of the generation that succeeded Segovia, he played a major role in the spread of guitar music. He also made a great contribution to expanding the possibilities of the guitar by developing a good-sounding 10-string guitar with an additional 4 strings in the bass section (1964).
