A city in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in western Germany. It is located about 50 km southeast of Münster, in the center of the Soest Plain, an intermediate region where the Münsterland lowlands transition to the mid-mountain range. In the Middle Ages, it flourished as a commercial city of the Hanseatic League. Even today, it has markets for agricultural products and livestock, and is closely linked to the surrounding agricultural regions. Its industries are characterized by light bulbs, machinery, construction equipment, and textile products. Population 42,602 (1991 estimate).
