American actress. Born in Ohio. She began performing on stage at the age of five, and entered the film industry in 1912 with her sister Dorothy. She appeared in DW Griffith's films The Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1916), Falling Flowers (1919), and Orphans of the Storm (1921), and her innocent, pretty appearance and acting made her a representative heroine of the early film era. She worked on stage in the 1930s, but returned to the film industry in the 1940s, playing elegant older roles. Her main works include C. Laughton's The Night of the Hunter (1955) and J. Huston's The Unforgiven (1959). She remained active until her later years, winning a special prize at the Cannes Film Festival for her role in L. Anderson's The Whales of August (1987).

米国の俳優。オハイオ州生れ。５歳の時から舞台に立ち，1912年姉のドロシーとともに映画界入り。D.W.グリフィス監督の《国民の創生》（1915年），《イントレランス》（1916年），《散り行く花》（1919年），《嵐の孤児》（1921年）などに出演し，純情・可憐な容姿と演技で映画草創期の代表的なヒロインとなった。1930年代には舞台で活動するが，1940年代に映画界にカムバックし，上品な老け役を演じた。主な作品にC.ロートン監督《狩人の夜》（1955年），J.ヒューストン監督《許されざる者》（1959年）などがある。L.アンダーソン監督《八月の鯨》（1987年）でカンヌ映画祭特別賞を受賞するなど，晩年にいたるまで現役であり続けた。
