A town in Teshio County in northern Hokkaido. The Soya Main Line runs through it. It occupies the plains downstream of the Teshio River, and part of it faces the Sea of Japan. Agricultural production has increased with the development of the Sarobetsu wilderness in the northwest and the spread of dairy farming. In addition to floriculture, the town also has industries such as dairy products and chemicals. 北海道北部,天塩(てしお)郡の町。宗谷本線が通じる。天塩川下流の平野を占め,一部は日本海に面する。北西部のサロベツ原野の開拓と酪農経営の普及により農業生産が高まった。花卉(かき)栽培などを行うほか,乳製品,化学などの工業がある。2005年にサロベツ原野がラムサール条約登録湿地となる。574.10km2。2677人(2010)。
