In China, there was a custom of erecting shrines for great people and local officials who were revered by the people while they were still alive. There is a story in Zhuangzi about Geng Sang Chu, a disciple of Laozi, being made a god and being worshipped as a god of the state, but the first examples of this in historical fact were in the early Han dynasty, such as the Luan Public Shrine built for Luan Bu, the prime minister of Yan, the Shi Xiang Shrine built for Shi Qing, the prime minister of Qi, and the Yu Gong Shrine built for Yu Gong, who conducted fair trials as a county and district prison official.
