A book by the French materialist philosopher Julien de La Mettrie, published in 1747. A masterpiece of 18th century materialism. Positioned as an extension of Descartes's animal machine theory, it does not acknowledge any fundamental differences between humans and animals, and develops a thoroughly mechanistic materialism in which the soul is part of the material tissue of the brain, and humans are machines driven by this motive force. From this standpoint, the author draws on the Epicurean virtue of loving life and not fearing death, as well as love of nature.
