...He enjoyed overwhelming popularity and high acclaim in Japan in particular, and films such as The Carrot (1932), The White Virgin (1934), To the Ends of the Earth (1935), Our Companions (1936), Nostalgia and The Ballroom Diary (both 1937), and At the End of the Road (1939) are remembered by many as masterpieces of French cinema. During World War II, he went to America and made films such as Feast of the Fates (1942), known as a masterpiece of anthology films. After the war, he returned to Europe and continued to direct in France, England, and Germany, but he only managed to save face with the French-Italian co-production Don Camillo (1952). Especially after the "Nouvelle Vague," he came to be seen as a "craftsman director" left behind by the trends of postwar society. His past successes are attributed to the power of screenplays by Charles Spaak (1903-75) and Henri Janson (1900-70), and Duvivier's greatest achievement is said to have been creating the image of Jean Gabin as a star, so low is his reputation in France.
