These British Palladian architects, father and son, worked together on the urban planning of Bath, a city of ancient Roman origins located about 160km west of London. In 1727, John Wood the Elder (1704-54) was invited to Bath as one of the influential people planning the development of Bath, which was once again in the spotlight as a hot spring resort, and he designed Queen Square (1735), Prior Park (1748), and the Circus (a circular row of houses; construction began in 1754 and completed by his son in 1764). John Wood the Younger (1728-81) added Royal Crescent (1775), which leads to the Circus. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
