Kija (English spelling)

Japanese: 箕子 - きし（英語表記）Kija

A legendary king and wise man in ancient China and Korea. He was a member of the Yin clan, but fled to Korea to escape the tyranny of the Yin dynasty at the end of the dynasty. He became king and is said to have ruled Korea with benevolence based on the eight precepts. This theory that he came from the east was fabricated later by Chinese thought, but the "Gija Joseon" state that is said to have originated from him was replaced by Yan Wei Man around the beginning of the 2nd century BC, and the "Wisi Joseon" state was established. The legendary "Dangun Joseon" and "Gija Joseon" and "Wisi Joseon" are collectively called Gojoseon.

古代中国，朝鮮の伝説上の王者，賢人。殷の一族であったが，殷朝末期，その暴政を避けて朝鮮に亡命。国王となり，8条の教訓によって仁政を施したとされている。この箕子東来説は中国思想によって後世に作為されたものであるが，彼に由来するとされる「箕子朝鮮」国は前2世紀初め頃燕人衛満によって代られ，「衛氏朝鮮」国が成立した。伝承的存在の「檀君朝鮮」と「箕子朝鮮」「衛氏朝鮮」を合せて古朝鮮ともいう。
