Urinary tract infection refers to bacterial infection of the urinary tract, i.e., the kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra. The causative bacteria are often gram-negative bacilli such as Escherichia coli and Proteus, or gram-positive cocci such as Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus aureus. Urinary tract infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae have unique symptoms and progression, so they are distinguished as specific infections of the urinary tract. They are broadly classified as acute or chronic depending on the progression of symptoms. The former develop suddenly and are completely cured in a short period of time, while the latter show prolonged periods of remission and recurrence, or are cured but then recur shortly after.

尿路すなわち腎臓，尿管，膀胱，尿道の細菌感染症をいう。原因菌は，大腸菌，プロテウス菌のようなグラム陰性杆菌や，ブドウ球菌，連鎖球菌のようなグラム陽性球菌のことが多い。結核菌や淋菌などによって起こる尿路感染症は，それぞれ独特の症状と経過をとるため，尿路の特異的感染症と呼び区別される。症状の経過によって急性と慢性に大別される。前者は急激に発症し短い経過で完全に治癒するが，後者では長びき一進一退をくり返したり，いったん治癒してもすぐ再発したりする。
