Masaru Ibuka

Businessman. Born in Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture, as the eldest son of engineer Tasuku. Graduated from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Engineering, Waseda University in 1933 (Showa 8). While still a student, he showed his talent by inventing the "Running Neon." After graduation, he joined the Photo Chemical Laboratory, and became head of the radio department at Nippon Koon in 1937 and managing director at Nippon Keisokuki in 1940. After World War II, he founded Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo in 1946 (Showa 21) and became managing director, and in 1950 he became president. In 1958, the company was renamed Sony, and he became chairman in 1971, honorary chairman in 1976, founder and honorary chairman in 1990, and founder and supreme advisor in 1994. The company placed emphasis on original product development, and was one of the first to succeed in developing overseas markets. He is one of the leading engineer-managers of the postwar period, and in addition to being chairman of the Japan Institute of Invention and Innovation, he was also deeply interested in early childhood education and served as chairman of the Early Childhood Development Association. Received the Order of Culture in 1992.

実業家。栃木県日光に技術者甫(たすく)の長男として生まれる。1933年(昭和8)早稲田(わせだ)大学理工学部電気工学科卒業。すでに在学中「走るネオン」の発明で才能を示す。卒業後は写真化学研究所に入り、1937年日本光音の無線部長、1940年日本測定器の常務となる。第二次世界大戦後、1946年(昭和21)東京通信工業を創立し専務、1950年社長に就任。1958年ソニーと社名を変更、1971年会長、1976年名誉会長、1990年(平成2)ファウンダー・名誉会長、1994年ファウンダー・最高相談役に就任。同社は独自の製品開発を重視し、海外市場の開拓にもいち早く成功を収めた。彼は戦後の代表的な技術者経営者の一人であり、発明協会会長のほか、幼児教育にも関心が深く、幼児開発協会理事長も務めた。1992年文化勲章受章。
