Chichibu Gakuen

Japanese: 秩父学園 - ちちぶがくえん
Chichibu Gakuen
Its official name is National Chichibu Gakuen. There are 295 public and private facilities for mentally retarded children (mentally retarded children) in the whole country (as of March 1995), but Chichibu Gakuen is the only national facility for mentally retarded children. It was established in 1958 in Tokorozawa City, Saitama Prefecture. It was established based on the Ministry of Health and Welfare Establishment Act with the objectives of housing and protecting, guiding and raising severely mentally retarded children and blind or deaf-mute mentally retarded children who are difficult to handle in regular facilities, as well as contributing to the improvement of the protection and guidance of children in facilities for mentally retarded children nationwide.

正称は国立秩父学園。精神薄弱児(精神発達遅滞児)施設は公・私立のものをあわせて全国で295ヵ所(1995年3月現在)に及ぶが,秩父学園は唯一の国立精神薄弱児施設である。1958年,埼玉県所沢市に設置された。一般の施設では扱うことが困難な重度の精神薄弱児および盲目もしくは聾啞である精神薄弱児を収容して,保護指導・育成するとともに,あわせて全国の精神薄弱児施設における児童の保護および指導の向上に寄与することを目的として,厚生省設置法に基づき開設された。
