Latin for a sanctuary dedicated to a nymph. From the Hellenistic period, monumental structures were built at springs, water sources, and water-drawing points within cities, and this usually refers to such buildings. Many of these buildings imitate the frons scaenae (stage backdrops) or are exedra-shaped, and famous examples include the nymphaeums at Olympia, the septizodium built by Septimius Severus in Rome, and Hadrian's Villa.
