Nymphaeum (English spelling)

Japanese: ニュンファエウム（英語表記）nymphaeum

Latin for a sanctuary dedicated to a nymph. From the Hellenistic period, monumental structures were built at springs, water sources, and water-drawing points within cities, and this usually refers to such buildings. Many of these buildings imitate the frons scaenae (stage backdrops) or are exedra-shaped, and famous examples include the nymphaeums at Olympia, the septizodium built by Septimius Severus in Rome, and Hadrian's Villa. ニンフに献ぜられた聖所を意味するラテン語。ヘレニズム時代から泉，水源地，都市内の水汲場にモニュメンタルな建造物が設けられるようになり，通常はその建物を指す。建物はフロンス･スカエナエfrons scaenae(舞台背景部分)を模したものや，エクセドラ形のものが多く，オリュンピア，ローマのセプティミウス･セウェルスが建立したセプティゾディウム，〈ハドリアヌスの別荘〉などのニュンファエウムが有名。【青柳正規】
