Yayoi pottery

Japanese: 弥生土器 - やよいどき

This is ancient Japanese pottery that appeared after Jomon pottery. It was named after the site of its discovery in 1884 at the Yayoi-cho shell mound in Hongo, Tokyo. Compared to Jomon pottery, it is mostly light brown in color and has simple yet elegant shapes and patterns. Its characteristic vessel shapes include narrow-necked jars, wide-mouthed jars, bowls, and high-rise containers, and it was mainly made using the ring-stacking method, in which ring-shaped clay bands are piled up, without the use of a potter's wheel. Types of patterns include sunken lines drawn with a spatula, comb patterns made with a tool like the teeth of a comb, shell patterns, and rope patterns, with rope patterns being particularly prevalent in eastern Japan, where the traditions of Jomon culture remain strong.

縄文(じょうもん)土器に続いて出現した日本古代の土器。1884年東京本郷の弥生町貝塚で発見されたのを機に，出土地にちなんで命名。縄文土器に比べ，淡褐色の明るい色のものが多く，形や文様は簡素で優美である。首の細い壺，広口の甕(かめ)，鉢，高坏(たかつき)などが特徴的器形で，成形には，輪状にした粘土帯を積み上げる輪積法がおもに用いられ，轆轤(ろくろ)の使用はみられない。文様の種類には，へら描きの沈線文，櫛(くし)の歯状の器具を用いた櫛目文，貝殻文，縄目文などがあり，縄目文は縄文文化の伝統が濃く残る東日本に特に多い。
