Kuril Warships Incident

Japanese: 千島艦事件 - ちしまかんじけん

A dispute between Japan and Britain over compensation for the sinking of a Japanese warship during the Meiji period. In November 1892, the torpedo gunboat Kuril Island (750 tons) collided with the British ship Ravenna in the Seto Inland Sea while on a voyage from France and sank, killing 74 crew members. The Japanese government filed a lawsuit against the P & O Steamship Company, to which the British ship belonged, at the British Consular Court in Yokohama, claiming that the British ship had been negligent, but both sides were dissatisfied with the ruling and repeatedly appealed to the British Consular Court in Shanghai and the British House of Lords. After three years and expenses of over 120,000 yen, a settlement was finally reached.

明治時代の日本軍艦の沈没補償をめぐる日英間の紛争事件。1892年11月，水雷砲艦千島(750トン)がフランスから回航中，瀬戸内海で英船ラベンナ号と衝突沈没し，乗員74名が殉職した。日本政府は英船に過失があったとして，その所属したP ＆ O汽船会社を相手どって横浜のイギリス領事法廷に出訴したが，互いに判決を不服とし，上海のイギリス領事法廷，イギリス上院に上訴を繰り返して結局3年の歳月と12万余円の費用をかけたのち，和解が成立。
