A general term for fish of the Sparidae family, but usually refers to red sea bream. The body is laterally compressed, with small blue-green spots scattered across a red background, and can reach a total length of over 1m. It is distributed from Japan to the South China Sea. It is a sedentary, near-shore fish and is carnivorous. It comes to the coast to spawn in April to June. It is caught by pole fishing, longline fishing, and gochi net fishing. It has been called the king of sea fish since ancient times, and is enjoyed as sashimi, salt-grilled, ushio, hamayaki, and tai-miso. There are about 10 other species of sea bream known to be native to Japan, including yellow sea bream, black sea bream, and crimson sea bream. In addition, because red sea bream was considered to be the most fish-like fish, there are many other species of sea bream that are generally called sea bream, such as sweetlip bream and yellow porgy, as well as other species of sea bream that are not members of the Sparidae family. There are nearly 300 species with the word "tai" in their names, which accounts for 10% of the fishes native to Japan.

タイ科の魚の総称であるが，普通にはマダイをさす。体は側扁し，赤色地に青緑色の小斑点が散在，全長は1m以上に達する。日本〜南シナ海などに分布。定着性の近海魚で肉食性。４〜６月に産卵のため沿岸に来遊する。一本釣り，延縄（はえなわ），ごち網などで漁獲。古来，海魚の王といわれ，刺身，塩焼，うしお，浜焼，鯛みそなどとして賞味される。ほかにキダイ，クロダイ，チダイなど日本産タイ類は10種ほど知られている。またマダイがもっとも魚らしい魚であるとされたため，コショウダイ，フエフキダイなどのように，タイ科以外にも一般にタイといわれるものが多い。名の一部にタイとつくものは，300種近くにのぼり，日本産魚類の１割にあたる。
