A type of marquetry. When it is made only from pieces of wood, it is also called marquetry. It is a decorative technique in which small pieces of wood with different colors and grains are inlaid into the surfaces of wooden products such as the interior walls of buildings, furniture, and small boxes to create various patterns. Ivory, tortoiseshell, seashells, brass, etc. may also be inlaid. This technique has been known since ancient times, but it developed particularly in 15th-century Italy, and then in the 17th and 18th centuries in France and southern Germany.
