Bell moth

Japanese: ハマキガ(葉巻蛾) - ハマキガ（英語表記）bell moth

A general term for insects in the Lepidoptera, Tortricidae family. Small to medium-sized moths with long, slender wings and often with sharply pointed forewings. The hind wings are generally trapezoidal and lack markings. There are beautiful species such as the velvet moth that have a wingspan of over 5cm, but generally most have a span of around 2cm and plain colors. Distributed worldwide, with over 500 species known in Japan. A small proportion are diurnal flying species, but most are nocturnal and often arrive at lights. The English name comes from the fact that many species, when stationary with their wings folded, resemble a bell.

鱗翅目ハマキガ科Tortricidaeの昆虫の総称。小型から中型のガで，翅は細長く，前翅頂は鋭くとがることが多い。後翅は一般に台形で，斑紋をもたない。ビロードハマキのように開張5cmを超える美麗種もいるが，一般に開張2cm内外で，じみな色彩のものが多い。全世界に分布し，日本には500種以上が知られている。ごく一部は昼飛性だが，大部分が夜行性で，よく灯火に飛来する。英名は翅をたたんで静止する姿が鐘を連想させる種が多いことによる。
