The easternmost province of Canada. It consists of the island of Newfoundland and the province of Labrador on the Canadian mainland. Its area is 404,517 km2. Its population is 575,400 (1995). Its capital is St. John's. Reflecting its long history as a British colony, the population is overwhelmingly of British descent, accounting for 93% of the total population. The island's climate is harsh due to the influence of the Labrador Current, with 207 days of rain (snow) per year, and only four months from June to early October when it is free from frost. Labrador is drier, but is covered in snow for half the year. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
