Burgtheater (English: Burgtheater)

Burgtheater (English: Burgtheater)

Austria's national theater. Located in Vienna. It was founded in 1741 as a court theater by Austrian Empress Maria Theresa in a ballroom adjacent to the Imperial Palace. In 1776, Joseph II named it the German National Theater, and it flourished as the stronghold of German-language theater in Vienna. The new theater, completed in 1888, was destroyed during World War II, but was rebuilt in 1955 and remains so to this day. Since the early 19th century, it has been famous throughout the world as one of the leading theater theaters in the German-speaking world. Since its founding, it has consistently focused on staging classical plays. In the 19th century, it mainly cultivated high-class plays by Goethe, Schiller, Grillparzer, and others, and was reluctant to stage new works by Hauptmann, Hofmannsthal, Schnitzler, and others, but now it is only a story, and it is becoming more proactive in new theatrical trends. It has an attached Academy Theatre and meets the expectations of modern audiences with its ambitious repertoire.
