A port city on the Baltic Sea in southeastern Sweden, 85 km southwest of Stockholm. It is the capital of Södermanland County and has a population of 66,000 (1990). It is located at the mouth of the river of the same name and produces automobiles, furniture, textiles, lumber, etc., and iron ore is shipped from the outer port of Oxelösund. It has been a large trading port since the Middle Ages and suffered a great fire in 1665 and war with Russia in 1719, but the 12th century church, castle ruins, 17th century town hall, and museum still remain.
