Wernicke's area

Also called the sensory speech center, this is the part of the speech center that is responsible for hearing, understanding, and remembering. It is named after its discoverer, C. Wernicke (1874). It is centered in the posterior part of the first temporal gyrus of the left cerebral cortex.
