Also called nematodes. A class of invertebrate pouched animals. There are many types, both parasitic and self-living. Some are harmful to humans, livestock, and crops. They have no legs or segments, and are generally thread-like or long cylindrical. In principle, they are dioecious. Those that parasitize the human body include roundworms, pinworms, zooworms, filariae, trichozoans, and water worms. In plants, they mainly parasitize the roots, causing galls, rotting, and withering of leaves, as well as infecting stems, bulbs, and seeds. Plant diseases caused by the invasion of these nematodes include root-knot nematode disease in sweet potatoes, soybeans, barley, and wheat, cyst nematode disease and heart blight nematode disease in rice, and leaf blight nematode disease in chrysanthemums and violets.

ネマトーダとも。無脊椎動物袋形動物の一綱。寄生性のものと自活性のものとがあり種類も多い。人畜や農作物に有害なものがある。脚，環節をもたず，おおむね糸状，長円柱状。原則的に雌雄異体。人体に寄生するものに，カイチュウ，ギョウチュウ，ジュウニシチョウチュウ，フィラリア（糸状虫），ベンチュウ，ガッコウチュウなどがある。植物ではおもに根に寄生し，こぶをつくったり，腐らせたり，葉を枯らしたり，茎，球根，種子を冒すものなどがある。これらセンチュウの侵入により起こる植物の病気には，サツマイモ・ダイズ・オオムギ・コムギの根こぶ線虫病，イネのシスト線虫病や心枯線虫病，キクやスミレの葉枯線虫病などがある。
